Lactononadecapeptide
Lactononadecapeptide
A peptide* consisting of 19 linked amino acids that has been found in the Asahi Group’s proprietary fermented milk formulation.
*Peptides are chains of multiple amino acids. Fermented milk contains a number of different peptides produced by lactic acid bacteria during the fermentation process.
Research background
The Asahi Group’s research on lactic acid bacteria and fermented milk can be traced back to Calpis, a company that produced and released Japan’s first lactic acid bacteria beverage in 1919. Tests done on mice in the 1970s as part of a collaborative research project between Calpis (then still an independent company) and Riken found that longevity was promoted by a proprietary formulation of fermented milk made from lactic acid bacteria and yeast. Subsequent research has demonstrated that fermented milk provides a number of health benefits that include lower blood pressure, better immunity and reduced fatigue. Scientifically describing the health-promoting components that create these benefits has led to the discovery of several functional peptides.
Major research findings
- Better cognitive functions such as memory and concentration
- Possible prevention of Alzheimer’s disease suggested by tests on disease model mice
Creating a society of health and abundance
The problem of Japan’s declining birthrates and aging population continues to gain momentum, calling for efforts to promote healthy life extension that will keep the society healthy and active for as long as possible. Dementia is one of the primary factors hindering healthy life extension. The brain uses very complex mechanisms for memory and cognition, and much about the onset and progression of dementia remains unknown. Scientifically describing the mechanisms by which food components act on the brain will enable prevention of cognitive decline through dietary supplementation, helping promote healthy life extension.
